Is a three-phase solar upgrade worth it in Pakenham?
Three phase can unlock a cleaner design for larger solar, EV charging and all-electric loads, but it is not a compulsory upgrade for every 10 kW panel array. Decide from the network approval, load plan, cable route and total project cost.
Keep single phase unless the loads justify the upgrade
For an ordinary home with a 6.6 kW array, gas cooking, one air conditioner and no high-power EV plan, staying single phase is normally the straight recommendation. The upgrade cost is unlikely to earn its way back through solar exports alone. A well-designed single-phase system can use solar behind the meter, charge a battery and control export to the network-approved value.
Three phase becomes worth serious consideration when the next 3 to 5 years include a 10 to 20 kW solar array, an 11 or 22 kW EV charger, multiple large air conditioners, induction cooking, a heat pump, pool equipment, workshop machinery or a large 3 phase battery inverter. It can distribute current across conductors and reduce the burden of stacking every new load on one phase.
Do not use roof panel capacity as the only trigger. A quote may say 13.2 kW solar, but that can mean a 13.2 kW DC array paired with a smaller inverter and controlled export. Read our Pakenham grid connection guide alongside the single-line diagram.
5 kW and 15 kW are export figures, not household use limits
United Energy publishes a basic maximum export of 5 kW for single and 2 phase connections, and 15 kW for 3 phase connections, for total installed capacity up to the applicable connection threshold. Pre-approval is still required and the returned offer is the authority for the site. The installer should not promise an export figure before checking the address and proposed equipment.
Export is the net power crossing the meter into the grid. Suppose a 10 kW inverter is producing 9 kW, the home is using 2 kW and a battery is accepting 2 kW. Net export is 5 kW. The system can therefore make and use more than 5 kW on site while holding export to 5 kW with approved controls. This is why a battery or scheduled EV charge can make a larger array useful even on a constrained connection.
On 3 phase, phase balance also matters. Large single-phase loads can still produce an uneven design even though 3 phases reach the property. A proper proposal maps the inverter, charger, hot water, cooking and heating loads across phases, then shows how the energy meter measures net flow. “You have 3 phase, so anything fits” is not a design.
Budget $5,000 to $12,000 for a straightforward conversion
New conductors, connection equipment and distributor attendance are major variables.
A larger 3 phase assembly, main switch, protection, labelling and meter configuration may be needed.
Prescribed electrical work requires the correct certificate and independent inspection in Victoria.
Long trenching, paving, a private pole or difficult underground access can take a project beyond $15,000.
A simple overhead service and accessible board is at the lower end. A newer Officer or Lakeside home may already have an underground 3 phase-capable route, but that must be verified, not assumed from the age of the estate. Acreage and semi-rural properties around Pakenham Upper, Maryknoll and Gembrook can have long private mains or poles, making a generic suburban allowance unreliable.
Ask for the upgrade as its own scope, with distributor fees, metering, electrician labour, Licensed Electrical Inspector, Certificate of Electrical Safety, switchboard and consumer mains itemised. Then compare the energy system separately through our 2026 solar pricing guide. If the board itself is the main issue, use the solar-ready switchboard guide.
Ask exactly what happens across all 3 phases
A 3 phase house does not automatically require a 3 phase battery, and a battery connected to one phase can still offset energy under some net-metering arrangements. Backup is the part that needs careful reading. Some systems back up selected single-phase circuits. Others use a 3 phase hybrid inverter and can support circuits across all phases. A genuinely 3 phase motor may need all phases present and may have a starting surge beyond the battery rating.
Require the quote to state usable capacity in kWh, continuous backup output in kW, surge duration, which phases remain live and which breakers are on the backup board. If 20% of a 13.5 kWh battery is held as reserve, 2.7 kWh is unavailable for daily bill shifting. If the inverter output is 5 kW, adding more battery modules increases runtime but may not increase the simultaneous appliance load.
That distinction is especially important for ducted systems, bore or transfer pumps and workshops. Start with our home battery sizing worksheet, then check the outage arrangement in the blackout backup guide.
What to ask the designer
- What phase supply and mains rating were confirmed on site?
- What are the panel kW, inverter kW and requested export kW as separate numbers?
- What did United Energy pre-approve, and is static or flexible export control required?
- Which existing and planned appliances sit on each phase?
- Does the 3 phase conversion save money elsewhere, such as avoiding a compromised charger or solar design?
- What is backed up during an outage, on which phases, and at what maximum kW?
- Are all distributor, meter, inspection, certificate, trenching and reinstatement costs included?
The most efficient time to consider the upgrade is before a switchboard replacement, major renovation or driveway landscaping. Combining planned electrical work can avoid paying twice for access and enclosure changes. Dry spring and early summer conditions can make trenching and outdoor works easier on Cardinia’s heavier clay sites, but urgent safety work should never wait for a season.
