Why your panels are losing output you can't see.
When a solar panel is brand new and clean, the front glass transmits more than 93 percent of incoming sunlight to the silicon cells underneath. That's it. Every other method risks scratching the anti-reflective coating on the glass, forcing water past the EVA seal at the frame, or voiding the 25-year performance warranty outright.
For single-storey tile roofs with safe access, we'll set up roof-edge protection, climb on, work each panel with a 250mm soft-bristle brush dipped in a deionised water reservoir, and rinse with the same water. Deionised water is the secret - mains tap water from Pakenham leaves a calcium spotting as it evaporates that looks streaky and traps more dust the following week. Deionised water dries completely clear. For double-storey or steep-pitched roofs we use a water-fed telescopic pole from the ground, same brush head, same water - keeps us off slippery tiles and is just as effective.
What's NOT a panel clean.
A pressure washer is not a panel clean - the impact pressure of a 1500-PSI jet exceeds the panel frame seal rating and forces water into the laminate. Window cleaner with ammonia is not a panel clean - it strips the anti-reflective coating. A garden hose on full pressure with a kitchen sponge is not a panel clean - the abrasive side of the sponge micro-scratches the glass. A magic eraser is not a panel clean - it's an abrasive masquerading as a non-abrasive. We get warranty-claim phone calls every season from people who've tried these and now have a documented "improper maintenance" finding on their array.
The right interval by suburb and tree cover.
One interval doesn't fit every Pakenham roof. Here's the rough guide we use when scheduling annual maintenance:
- 18 months - newer estates with tile roofs, minimal tree cover, no livestock paddock within 500m. Most of Cardinia Lakes, Lakeside, Heritage Springs core.
